LOVE that Derek Sivers quote. Gratitude helps put everything in perspective, I try to practice this concept daily. Comparing down, or comparing to our past selves are both ways to feel more grateful for what we already have.

Tracking my net worth also gives me a real sense of achievement. It’s a great idea to glance back at where you came from every now and then to see just how much progress has been made.

This is great! Things aren’t always as bad or as great as you think. The person who looks like they have it all might be looking at people above them, jealous of what they have. It is important to look around every once in awhile and realize that you have a lot of things that others would kill for. Helps you realize what you have.

Very true. Relative comparisons are double edged. Comparing to those above you can motivate you to be more successful. But this can also cause stress and unhappiness if you take it too far. On the flip side, constantly comparing yourself to those who have it worse may make you complacent and prevent you from meeting your full potential. That’s why it’s necessary to strike a balance between the two. Be competitive, but look back once in a while and appreciate what you have.
