Visualizing the median one-bedroom and two-bedroom rent prices in all 3,000 + U.S. Counties

The 2012 - 2016 American Community Survey is a 5-year study conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau that summarizes various housing and income data across the U.S.

Using this data, I decided to take a look at median one-bedroom and two-bedroom rent prices in all 3,000+ U.S. counties. The maps below show the results.

Technical note: Rent includes the cost of rent as well as utilities like water, gas, electricity, and sewer.

The following map shows the median one-bedroom rent by county. Counties with no available data are colored in white.

Median two-bedroom rent by county

The following map shows the median two-bedroom rent by county. Counties with no available data are colored in white.

Interesting Observations

New York County, New York has the highest median one-bedroom rent ($1,745) and Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota has the lowest ($164)

Arlington County, Virginia has the highest median two-bedroom rent ($2,127) and Mellette County, South Dakota has the lowest ($277)

California and Virginia are home to 9 of the top 10 highest median two-bedroom rent counties.

In general, median one-bedroom and two-bedroom rent prices are highest in five regions: the California coast, northwest Washington state, central Colorado, southern Florida, and the northeast coast.
